CAN bus

The CAN bus (Controller Area Network) is the vehicle’s internal data network – in effect its central nervous system. It lets electronic control units (ECUs) such as the engine and the transmission exchange data with each other, and it is the primary source of vehicle data for fleet telematics.

How does a CAN bus work?

Nearly every working part of a vehicle has its own ECU (Electronic Control Unit): one for the engine, one for the airbags, one for ABS braking, one for the transmission. These are the nodes of the network; a modern vehicle can carry 70 or more of them. Each device transmits its data serially, and when two transmit at once, the higher-priority device continues at the expense of the lower-priority one. Every ECU receives everything broadcast on the bus and is programmed to accept some data and ignore the rest.
