ETA (estimated time of arrival)

ETA (estimated time of arrival) is the predicted time at which a vehicle reaches its destination or next stop. In road freight, ETA is calculated not just from route and distance, but from driver driving-time and rest limits, operational stops (refuelling, loading, unloading, customs) and current traffic conditions.

Why is truck ETA harder to calculate than car ETA?

A passenger-car navigation ETA only needs the route and traffic. A truck ETA must also account for the driver’s remaining legal driving time and mandatory breaks, vehicle and cargo characteristics (for example dangerous or high-value goods), and scheduled operations such as refuelling, loading, servicing or customs clearance. Ignoring any of these produces an arrival time the fleet cannot actually meet.

What goes into an ETA at the planning stage?

Before departure, the ETA is built from four inputs: vehicle and cargo characteristics, expected traffic load for the region and time of day, driver driving and break limits (solo or crew), and planned operational stops. With these, a dispatcher can check whether a route is feasible within the agreed time window, set the departure time (ETD – estimated time of departure) and place required breaks where they fit the cargo and the delivery plan.

How is ETA updated during the journey?

Once the order is running, live data replaces assumptions: the vehicle’s current position, the driver’s actual worked hours and remaining driving time, and present traffic conditions and disruptions. The system recalculates the ETA continuously, so dispatchers can track whether the schedule still holds, give customers a reliable unloading time, including on multi-stop orders, and re-plan when delays or route changes occur. What is the difference between ETA and ETD?

ETA is the estimated time of arrival at a destination or stop; ETD is the estimated time of departure. In transport planning, ETD is set first, because it determines when the route must start for the ETA to be achievable, and both are updated dynamically as conditions change.

Is a truck ETA a fixed value?

No. ETA is recalculated throughout the journey based on the vehicle’s live position, the driver’s remaining driving time and current traffic. A planning-stage ETA is a feasibility check; the in-transit ETA is the value shared with customers.

Why does driver working time affect ETA?

EU rules cap daily driving time and mandate breaks and rest periods. A truck ETA that ignores them predicts an arrival the driver is not legally allowed to make, so remaining driving time is a core input alongside route and traffic.
