Telemetry
Telemetry is the automatic measurement of data at a remote point and its wireless transmission to a receiving system for monitoring and analysis. In road transport, vehicle telemetry covers GPS position, CAN bus parameters and on-board sensor readings, transmitted over the mobile network to a server where fleet software processes them.
How does vehicle telemetry work?
A telemetry unit installed in the vehicle reads data from three sources: a GNSS receiver (position, speed, heading), the vehicle’s CAN bus (engine speed, fuel level, coolant temperature, odometer, fault codes) and dedicated sensors (trailer temperature, door status, axle load, fuel probes). The unit packages the readings and sends them over a cellular connection – typically LTE with fallback to older standards – to a server at a set interval or when a defined event occurs. When the vehicle leaves network coverage, the unit stores data locally and transmits it once the connection returns.
What data does fleet telemetry collect?
Typical telemetry channels in a commercial fleet include:
- position, speed and direction of travel from GNSS (see GPS fleet tracking)
- engine and drivetrain parameters read from the CAN bus or the FMS gateway
- fuel level and consumption from CAN data or calibrated fuel probes
- driver behaviour events: harsh braking, harsh acceleration, sharp cornering
- cargo-space conditions: temperature, humidity, door openings
The raw channels only become useful when software aggregates them into reports, alerts and scores. That is where telemetry ends and telematics begins.
What is the difference between telemetry and telematics?
Telemetry is the data layer: measuring values remotely and transmitting them. Telematics is the broader discipline that combines telemetry with data processing, two-way communication and the applications built on top: route planning, driver coaching, compliance reporting. In practice, every telematics system contains telemetry; telemetry on its own is just a stream of readings. Is telemetry the same as GPS tracking?
No. GPS tracking is one telemetry channel: position, speed and heading. Full vehicle telemetry adds CAN bus parameters and sensor readings, which is what makes fuel monitoring, driver-behaviour analysis and cargo-condition alerts possible.
How often does a telemetry unit send data?
That depends on configuration. Moving vehicles typically report every few seconds to one minute, with immediate transmission on defined events such as harsh braking or ignition changes. Stationary assets can report as rarely as once a day to conserve battery.
Does telemetry work without mobile network coverage?
Data collection continues without coverage: the unit buffers readings in local memory and uploads them when the vehicle returns to network range. Real-time visibility is interrupted, but the historical record stays complete.
